Mercedes-Benz sales cross 10,000 units by September 2015, surpasses 2014 numbers

Mercedes-Benz India continued its stellar performance in the first nine months of the year. The company registered a robust 34% growth in the January-September 2015 period delivering 10,079 cars to its customers since January 2015. With that number, Mercedez-Benz India has sold almost the entire volume of 2014 in the first nine months of 2015.

The company’s new products including the CLA, the C-Class and the E-Class have been instrumental in achieving that growth in India. The company’s SUV portfolio has also registered a handsome growth.

While the sedan models from M-B portfolio registered a growth of 39% in the January-September 2015 period, the SUV portfolio showed a solid growth of 70% for the same period. Leading the sales numbers in the SUV segment was company’s compact crossover, the GLA, followed by the M-Class and the GL-Class. This growth will be further strengthened when the company launches its highly anticipated GLE (earlier M-Class) on 14th October for the India market.

Apart from the mainstream segments, the company also registered strong sales in the top-end performance brand Mercedes-AMG and the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brands. The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 is already sold out for the remaining quarter of 2015 and the booking for the locally produced Mercedes-Maybach S 500 has already commenced.

Mercedes-Benz’s dealer network, which is the densest for any luxury car maker in India, has also been a big enabler in achieving that growth. The company has 80 outlets in 39 cities, with a total of 12 new outlets inaugurated in Jan-Sep 2015 period

This underscores our customer centricity which is central to our business strategy. We will also redefine the luxury SUV segment with the launch of the new GLE on 14th October.” added Mr. Folger.

2015 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro Review: Classic Flair

Introduced first in 1998, the Audi TT became an instant hit among the car design connoisseurs and has earned the honour of being a modern classic during the course of its three generation old history. Maintaining its compact, distinguished and fresh new take on design in the rather serious world of Audi cars, the TT has succeeded in becoming one of the most popular templates of a lightweight sports car in the modern era.

In its latest avatar, the TT gets underpinned by VW group’s MQB architecture which also works underneath cars such as the VW Golf, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia. The MQB platform essentially offers a FWD layout with the flexibility of being able to adopt a four-wheel drive system.

new Audi TT India review2015 (4)

The new TT is the most compact car within the VW group to employ the platform.

Spunkier, more chiselled than ever, and boasting an interior which both users and critics have been raving about, the TT has been re-imagined to be more desirable and enjoyable than ever in its newest iteration. Here’s our detailed review.

Design and style

In a world where every successive model is getting longer and wider, the TT has managed to shrink in size, even with an extension in its wheelbase by 37mm. The new TT is very marginally shorter and narrower than the model it replaces, though it doesn’t look like it. Advanced aluminium and steel construction has shaved off about 50 kg from the car’s weight, making it lighter, nimbler and more efficient too.

In its latest form, the TT stands true to its original shape and proportions, and there is no mistaking it for anything else. It’s as distinctive in form as say a 911, or a Mini, which is a daunting feat for a car with a much shorter history. While the original TT was quite curvy and more bean-shaped, the MY 2015 car is more rakish, sculpted and sharply styled than any of its predecessors.

new 2015 Audi TT 2.0 tfsi front (2)

Up front, the new TT gets a hexagonal Audi single frame grille with pronounced corners and glossy plastic innards featuring seven horizontal and six vertical stripes. The grille is flanked by aggressively styled, angular air scoops with a honeycomb mesh within. The front bumper also features a wide, though narrow slit beneath the grille for enhanced aggressiveness and a visually wider, squatter stance.

The bonnet lip is angled sharply, with deliberately pronounced, gapped shut-lines to underline what has always been a TT signature. The small surface between the grille and the edgy headlamps almost forms a mini air-scoop under the bonnet’s shut line. The razor sharp headlights are relentlessly angular, feature sharply styled DRLs, and share styling cues with the upcoming second generation R8.

2015 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI action red (8)

On the sides, flared wheel arches and the signature gap between the front fender and the bonnet is present as ever to lend the TT its most unmistakable styling cue. The shut-line curves around the fender as it always has in the past. The bonnet-line extends as a pronounced, tight crease all the way back into the car’s tail-lamps.

Other notable elements on the sides include the 18 inch 10 spoke wheels, the aircraft style, TT embossed, aluminium finish fuel tank cap and that forcefully dropping coupe roofline. The area under the door sills extends out and gets a bulge towards the rear for that added dash of sportiness.

new 2015 Audi TT India images (2)
At the rear, the low, wide and squat stance of the car underlines its sporty character. The LED tail lamps, emulating the sharply styled theme of the headlamps are joined by an array of LED brake lights spanning the width of the boot-lid. The Audi emblem is flanked by TT lettering on the left and 45TFSI quattro badging on the right. Under the rear bumper, a pronounced, blacked out surface housing twin, round exhausts signifies the car’s performance oriented personality. Then there are diffusers to let the trailing traffic know the pedigree of the car ahead.

new 2015 Audi TT rear (1)

The TT in its newest iteration has not lost even an ounce of its signature disposition. Staying true to its template, the new TT has evolved into the most muscular, chiselled and aggressive version of the sports car to date.

Engine, performance & driving dynamics

The 2.0 TFSI engine on the TT is designed as a dual character mill, meant to offer everyday usability while also packing a punch. Thanks to its high compression ratio and efficient combustion, the engine really delivers not just on performance and usability parameters, but is highly fuel efficient too. During our test run of nearly 300 km, we saw an average efficiency of nearly 10kmpl, even with some spirited driving. Now that’s an impressive number in the real world for a car that boasts 227 bhp (4500 rpm) of power, 370 Nm of torque (1600 rpm), sprints to 100 from a standstill in 5.3 seconds and is capable of breaching the 250 km/h mark. And just in case you thought that wasn’t enough, the new TT also produces 11 percent less emissions than the version it replaces.

2015 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI India review

Lighter, faster and more involving than ever, the new TT is the first model carrying the nameplate that truly has the performance to match its personality. Transmission is taken care of by a 6-speed dual clutch S-Tronic automatic, which is quick and efficient as ever and plays perfect foil to that rev happy, torquey, turbo charged engine. All that power is laid down onto the tar via a revised Quattro AWD, offering great levels of all-weather grip, fantastic agility and loads of smiles, with some help from that short wheelbase.

The engine loves being revved, and offers a heady discharge of torque from lower down the rev range to make the new TT both tractable at low revs and exciting once you decide to bury the pedal. The engine is incredibly smooth with a muffled sporty tone till mid revs, after which it gets enjoyably loud, particularly in Dynamic mode where the engine sound is amplified and is clearly audible inside the cabin. At no point does the 2.0 litre four cylinder engine resist being taken all the way up to its 6750 rpm redline.

2015 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI action red (13)

A finely balanced engine, with the right blend of smoothness, sporty aural notes, great performance, and practical everyday efficiency, the 2.0 TFSI propelling the TT impresses with its versatility.

The TT comes equipped with Audi’s progressive steering system, allowing for a more direct steering ratio at higher speeds. The steering, although light, especially in comfort mode is fairly precise. While it weighs up more in the Dynamic mode, it’s still lighter than what you’d expect in cars of this category. It’s not vague or numb by any measure though, and rewards enthusiastic driving by letting you place the car on the road precisely with almost negligible understeer. While not too direct, or heavy, the steering on the TT feels incredibly precise with decent feel and feedback, and adds to the car’s agile and racy character. At a speed of 120 km/h the rear a spoiler extends from the trunk lid to improve both air resistance and downforce.

new 2015 Audi TT India images (4)

Audi’s drive select system lets you choose from Comfort, Dynamic, Efficiency and Auto modes – quite self explanatory, those names. You can, however, set the car up according to your personal preferences using the Individual mode which lets you fine tune the steering, suspension and transmission of the car in an even more fine-grained manner. In addition to tuning the aforementioned three parameters, the drive select system, for the first time, also adjusts the all-wheel drive system on Quattro models, to allow for a sportier drive in Dynamic Mode. Air conditioner load and throttle response from the sharp S-tronic transmission is adjusted based on the mode selected.

In terms of ride quality, the TT impresses with its supple suspension in comfort mode, which should be the mode you drive this sports coupe on most occasions, in India at least. Offering an absorbent, yet fairly firm ride in Comfort mode, the TT has the capability to take the rude challenges thrown by the Indian roads in its stride quite ably, even while wearing those low profile 245/40 R 18 shoes.

25 Breast Cancer Myths Busted

Myth: Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk.
Reality: Roughly 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors for the disease. But the family-history risks are these: If a first-degree relative (a parent, sibling, or child) has had or has breast cancer, your risk of developing the disease approximately doubles. Having two first-degree relatives with the disease increases your risk even more.

Myth: Wearing an underwire bra increases your risk of getting breast cance
Reality: Claims that underwire bras compress the lymphatic system of the breast, causing toxins to accumulate and cause breast cancer, have been widely debunked as unscientific. The consensus is that neither the type of bra you wear nor the tightness of your underwear or other clothing has any connection to breast cancer risk.

Myth: Most breast lumps are cancerous.
Reality: Roughly 80% of lumps in women's breasts are caused by benign (noncancerous) changes, cysts, or other conditions. Doctors encourage women to report any changes at all, however, because catching breast cancer early is so beneficial. Your doctor may recommend a mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy to determine whether a lump is cancerous.

Myth: Exposing a tumor to air during surgery causes cancer to spread.
Reality: Surgery doesn't cause breast cancer and it doesn't cause breast cancer to spread, as far as scientists can tell from the research so far.

Your doctor may find out during surgery that your cancer is more widespread than previously thought, however. And some animal studies have shown that removing the primary tumor sometimes enables metastatic cancers to grow, but only temporarily; this has not been demonstrated in humans.

Myth: Breast implants can raise your cancer risk.
Reality: Women with breast implants are at no greater risk of getting breast cancer, according to research. Standard mammograms don't always work as well on these women, however, so additional X-rays are sometimes needed to more fully examine breast tissue.

The highly-anticipated Mitsubishi 2016 Pajero Sport will be unveiled to the world on August 1, 2015. A day before its official debut at the 2015 Bangkok Big Motor Sale, a Thai website has reported that new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will be offered in three variants; namely, GLS, GT and GT with all-wheel drive. The GLS variant will be priced at 1.138 million Baht (INR 20.69 lakh)* and the GT variant will be priced at 1.25 million Baht (INR 22.72 lakh)*, and the top-end GT AWD variant will wear a price tag of 1.45 million Baht (INR 26.36 lakh)*. The website has also snapped a picture of the new SUV’s rear. The biggest change noticed here are the new vertically-oriented taillights, over the predecessor’s horizontally-oriented units.

*Note – Expected Thai prices mentioned
The front fascia of the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport wears the carmaker’s new ‘Dynamic Shield’ design, similar to one found on the new-gen Outlander. Other design touches include a set of sleek headlamps, aggressively styled, chrome-garnished front grille, muscular wheel arches, LED DRLs, plus blackened B- and C-pillars.

Underneath, the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is based on the new-generation Triton pickup truck. The Japanese carmaker will likely use the Triton’s 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, four-cylinder, MIVEC engine that develops 181 PS of power and 430 Nm of twist; the powerplant will be mated to a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. Having said that, Mitsubishi may also offer an all-new 8-speed unit with the 2016 Pajero Sport, though that remains to be seen. Concerning the AWD variants, power from the motor will be sent to all four wheels via Mitsubishi’s Super Select all-wheel drive system.

Thailand: 2016 Toyota Fortuner with custom bodykit looks swell

Barely launched a while back (17 July), mildly modified Toyota Fortuners are already popping up in Thailand. This particular, kitted up example is available at Thailand based bodykit installer Pasta Racing. Additional embellishments include new side, front and rear skirts built by Fiar Design, bigger wheels, while a set of new rear dampers also peek out. The whole kit apparently costs around 13,800 baht, which translates to around INR 25,000.

The fibreglass kits are manufactured in-house at Fiar Design’s facilities in Bangkok, and are finished in body color with light grey highlights. Coupled with the aftermarket, JDM-spec wheels and fatter rubber, the kit gives the new Fortuner a distinctively sporty stance. This car is also finished in Pearl White – 12,000 baht (almost INR 23,000) color option.

Triumph Motorcycles USA fined $ 2.9 million by NHTSA

enalty amounting to $2.9 million was imposed against Triumph Motorcycles Ltd by the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for violating the Safety Act’s reporting requirements and also failing to respond to communications from the department.

According to the consent order, Triumph is to pay $1.4 million as a cash penalty along with $500,000 to meet requirements to improve its safety practices. If the company violates this order or if any further Safety Act violations come up, an additional $1 million will be imposed. The consent order also instructs Triumph to hire an independent consultant to audit the company’s safety practices amd provide written plans for the approval by the NHTSA regarding practices and employee training. It also requires the company to form a compliance officer position which has direct access to its board and senior executives.

Triumph Tiger 800 XCA (1)

“Today’s enforcement action penalizes past violations, and it promotes the proactive safety culture manufacturers must adopt if they are to reduce safety defects and identify them more quickly than they occur,” says NHTSA administrator Mark Rosekind.

This huge penalty has its roots in September 2014 when Triumph recalled more than 1,300 motorcycles to fix a defect that could reduce steering capability which increases the risk of crashing. The NHTSA started an investigation into the matter in April 2015 to know whether or not Triumph had violated the requirement to report this defect in time. It also carried out investigations into other potential violations such as neglecting to provide quarterly reports on recall completion rates and failure to file early warning data reports regarding death and injury claims, warranty data and other information.

Triumph did admit to several of these violations in response to the investigation.

FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
When this Jaguar XF arrives in the States next year, no one will ask, “Is that the new Jag?” But the 2016 XF is entirely new, it just doesn’t look as new as it is. When the XF first debuted in late 2007, it broke Jaguar sedans away from the old-world aesthetic they’d been mining since the 1960s. Gone were the four round headlights, the lavish chrome, and the slavish devotion to the British firm’s heyday. It was the new Jaguar. We were so smitten by the XF’s design and dynamics that we put it on our 10Best list in 2009. As the first modern Jaguar you could drive without looking like you’d borrowed your great uncle’s car, its rejection of retro design made it possible for the rest of the Jaguar lineup to shake some of the design vestiges of the 1950s and ’60s. But as the XF enters its second generation, it has emerged looking a lot like its predecessor, which is now an old Jaguar.

Even if it doesn’t advance Jaguar design like its predecessor, the 2016 XF is still a damn good sequel. Its shape retains the aggression you expect of a brand named after a predatory cat. The XF isn’t likely to become the avatar of the gray-haired, but rather the gray-templed. Despite looking like the old XF, no sheetmetal is shared. “A few screws are all that we kept,” says Mike Bradley, senior launch manager. Put old and new next to each other and the new car’s nose appears more blunt, the side glass more upright, and the tail longer. The added length is simply a visual trick, though, as the XF is about the same size as before. The new platform offers two inches of extra wheelbase, but the car is a fraction of an inch shorter overall and lower. In the wind tunnel, the new car’s body is more slippery, boasting a claimed 0.26 Cd to the old car’s 0.29.

Aluminum Everywhere
Look underneath the bodywork, and it’s likely you’ll be eyeing a piece of aluminum. The XF’s aging Ford architecture that dated back to the Lincoln LS and the baroque Jaguar S-type is dead and buried. Aside from the doors, the trunklid, and the rear floorpan, the XF’s architecture is made up of bonded and riveted aluminum castings, extrusions, and stampings. The new platform is shared with the smaller XE, but according to Jaguar, only 20 percent of the XF is shared with the XE. What we find curious is that the doors and trunklid are steel. Saving weight by making door skins and trunklids out of aluminum is a relatively easy and obvious way to shave pounds. So why are the doors and trunklid steel? “It’s done to improve weight distribution,” says Bradley.

There is a bit more steel hidden away in the XF. For example, behind the stamped B-pillar is a high-strength-steel insert that bolsters rigidity and improves side-impact crashworthiness. A cast-magnesium crossbar hides behind the instrument panel and another cast-magnesium piece ties together the front structure. In all, the XF’s unibody is said to consist of 75 percent aluminum and be 28 percent more rigid. In all-wheel-drive V-6 guise, the car will weigh 265 pounds less than before, which would put it at about 4150 pounds. (The last supercharged AWD XF we weighed came in at 4385.)

Powering Up
When the XF goes on sale next year, the available engine will be the current XF’s 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. In base versions, the 60-degree V-6 again inhales from a twin-vortex supercharger, has its thirst slaked via direct fuel injection, and turns out 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. This model, dubbed the XF 35t, will start at $52,895, a price drop of about $5000 from last year’s V-6 XF.

A 380-hp version of the same V-6 (as seen in the F-type) will be available, too. The extra power is due to zeros and ones and not any physical differences—the engine is mechanically identical to the 340-horse version. Jaguar didn’t reveal what the 380-hp option will cost in the 35t, but the sportier XF S with the higher-output six will start at $63,695. All-wheel drive will be optional. The rear-biased all-wheel-drive system is similar to its predecessor and can send power forward on demand, but the transfer case now has a chain drive instead of gears. Quiet operation is said to be the major advantage of the chain, but it’s also 16 percent lighter and 10 percent more efficient.

Moving Out
Over the road, the XF is quiet, even with the 2.0-liter turbo-diesel that Jaguar had us sample first. A cold start did make us think that it might be powered by a vibrating iPhone, but once warm and on the road its NVH lessened considerably. This diesel is part of Jaguar’s in-house-engineered Ingenium engine family. When the diesel arrives in the States in the middle of 2016, it will have 180 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque and may surpass 40 mpg on the highway. Jaguar hasn’t announced pricing for the diesel, but it did promise that it will start at less than $50,000.

We also experienced the supercharged V-6s that will go on sale first. We drove both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions in the 380-hp tune. Equipped with a balance shaft, the V-6 doesn’t make much noise, even as it spins right past its 6000-rpm redline and hits its governor near 7000 rpm. There’s a mellow rumble from the engine but no supercharger whine. The eight-speed automatic transmission snaps off shifts quickly and with ease. In Jaguar’s estimation, an all-wheel-drive 380-hp V-6 will run from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds; we figure it’ll be a bit quicker. In our last test of a 340-hp 2015 XF with AWD, we managed a zero-to-60 time of 5.3 seconds. When asked about the possibility of V-8 versions, Jaguar reps smirked, but they aren’t ready to confirm anything.

Some of what the XF shares with the new XE is in the chassis. The independent rear suspension, made mostly of aluminum, comes from the XE. In front, the double wishbone is an adapted version of what’s in the F-type. Two suspension setups will be offered, a standard version with conventional shocks and an optional one with electronic shocks that can adjust damping on their own or via driver input. The roads in Spain where we sampled the cars are glassy smooth, the country apparently having spent its last Euro on road construction, so it’s difficult to judge the ride quality. On these roads the XF is taut but never harsh. Body control is excellent and the XF drives smaller and feels lighter than the German cars in its class.

The electric power steering comes across as light, but it imparts a sense of liveliness. While our European-market test cars were equipped with summer tires, American versions will get all-season rubber that likely will reduce grip and steering feel, but we’ll have to wait and see. It is theoretically possible to order summer tires for the XF, but Jaguar reps tell us it’ll be a special-order situation.

Inside the Shell
Like the exterior, the interior of the XF is a modernization of the themes established by its predecessor. The air vents still open like miniature garage doors; the gear selector is still a small dial that rises when you push the start button. In the center of the instrument panel is a large touch screen that features Jaguar’s latest infotainment system, InControl. On the standard version, phone, audio, and navigation functions, as well as the home screen, have a button for quick access. Once within the system though, there are no redundant controls, so you have to tap the screen to enter a point of interest into the navigation system or tune in a radio station. Response time is good, but it would take some getting used to before we were comfortable using it in traffic. Below the big touch screen are actual buttons that manage the climate-control system. We’d rather have volume and tuning knobs than HVAC buttons. Some audio functions can be controlled via the steering-wheel buttons, but we adjust the radio far more often than the climate control.

An InTouch Pro system with greater functionality will be optional. The Pro version features a larger screen that doesn’t have buttons, but the main screen can be personalized so that the functions you use most are immediately accessible. Opting for InTouch Pro also replaces the mechanical gauges in the cluster with a large configurable TFT screen that can display a large map from the navigation system, and it can show several different gauges that mimic mechanical gauges. Switch the car to Dynamic mode and the speedo and tachometer trade places, with the tach taking center stage.

In-car Wi-Fi will be available and the XF also will feature an app that allows the owner to monitor their car’s mileage, whereabouts, and fuel level. The app will also allow you to start the car, set the interior temperature, turn on the heated or cooled seats, and lock and unlock the doors. Tesla and other manufacturers have offered these capabilities for a couple of years, but they’re new to Jaguar.

Without a formal comparison test, and without driving the finalized U.S. version, we’re not quite ready to lock in the XF’s position in the mid-size luxury-sedan segment. But we can say that the new XF feels more lithe, involving, and playful than the usual suspects from Germany (the Audi A6, BMW 5-series, and the Mercedes-Benz E-class). While it isn’t as aggressive as the sports-car-aping Cadillac CTS Vsport, and its primary controls lack the dogged alertness of the Cadillac’s, it’s not far off. It does have a more pleasing interior than the CTS, and the Jag's supercharged V-6 is smoother than, if not as powerful as, the American car’s twin-turbo six. But this is just the first version of the new XF. Sportier and more powerful versions are undoubtedly on the drawing board.

New BMW 7-series Plug-In Hybrid Packs a Four-Cylinder

When BMW brought out a V-12 in its second-generation 7-series, the move stunned the industry and prompted Mercedes-Benz to follow suit. (In fact, a V-16 had been considered.) Fast forward to the new, sixth generation of the 7-series and BMW is confirming the availability of a four-cylinder, the first ever for a 7. The four will come as a plug-in hybrid, called the 740e xDrive, and will be sold in the United States.

The engine is a 254-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter. It’s supplemented by an electric motor integrated into the car’s eight-speed automatic transmission, and a lithium-ion battery. Total system output is 321 horsepower. The 740e will be able to drive up to 23 miles on an electric charge, although it will be virtually impossible to travel that far in real life even with an extremely soft touch on the accelerator.

In the U.S. market, the 740e—like all 7-series models sold here—will be offered in long-wheelbase form only. All-wheel drive is standard, while it’s an option in other markets. With the extreme level of sound dampening that’s incorporated into the new 7-series, NVH should be a non-issue despite the diminutive engine. That said, our sources at BMW expect that the V-8 model will remain the top seller in the range. “We’ve tried, but we can’t seem to get people off them,” an executive joked.

S660 Roadster a No-Go for U.S., But There’s More to Honda’s Sports-Car Story

While a new Automotive News report indicates that the fantastic, super-mega-tiny S660 roadster isn’t coming to the U.S. as was expected—we understood that a 1.0-liter S1000 was on the table—we thanked our lucky VTECs that we will at least be sold the Civic Type R. According to American Honda executive vice president John Mendel, the S660 is likely too small to cut it stateside, but he did add that we shouldn’t give up hope for a Honda-brand sports car here, which hooray!

Honda S660
As much as we’d love to see the fun-to-drive S660 here, it is truly very, very small: A Fiat 500 is 10.7 inches longer and six inches wider than the S660. Given how poorly micro machines like the Smart Fortwo and others do in the American marketplace, keeping the mid-engined S660 in Japan is likely the smart move. Yet Mendel says U.S. dealers are clamoring for both a low-priced sports car like the S2000 and something akin to the rumored baby Acura NSX designed to take on the likes of the Porsche Cayman.

Tips clean car guide

10 Tips to Clean and Detail Your Car Like a Pro Duct Clean to Keep that New-Car Smell The Best Carwash is a Hand Wash BMW X6 - Car and Driver Unrestrained styling, raucous power, and surprising agility define the X6—although its fastback design limits rear-seat room and cargo space. A 300-hp 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with an eight-speed automatic can be ordered with either rear- or all-wheel drive. An audacious 445-hp 4.4-liter turbo V-8 is optional and comes only with all-wheel drive. The standard Driving Dynamics Control system allows for five distinct driving modes and an available air suspension provides even more fine-tuning. Think of it as a wise investment: Keeping your auto filth-free can boost its resale value and eradicate those nasty end-of-lease excess-wear-and-tear charges. And if you focus on the task at hand, it shouldn't take more than an hour every two weeks. The Interior A shiny exterior polishes your automotive image with the world, but keeping the inside clean makes life more pleasant for you and your family. Dragging the cord of a vacuum cleaner through puddles is an especially bad idea, so clean the interior before the exterior. Dash and doors Using an electrostatic dust cloth, sweep the dash, knobs, vinyl surfaces, and plastic trim. Wipe them down with an all-purpose cleaner using an old towel. Pesky gearshift Gently pull the leather or plastic away from the sides to vacuum it and wipe it down with a cleanser-dampened towel. Floor and seats Start by taking out the floor mats and shaking them. If you don't have floor mats, get them―they protect the carpeting and can be replaced if stained beyond repair. If your region gets a lot of snow or rain, you might want to buy a rubber mat with deep channels to collect mud, sand, and salt (two front mats for inclement weather that each hold more than a quart of liquid, $70, griotsgarage.com). Vacuum the mats, the seats, and the floor carpeting, in that order. Slide the front seats all the way back and make sure to get the debris (spare change and fossilized French fries) from under the front seats. Then move the seats all the way forward and vacuum underneath from the backseat. Tilt the seats back so you can get the nose of the vacuum down in the cracks. Windows and windshield A microfiber cloth and a spritz of water clean well and won't cause streaks. Roll down the windows a few inches to get the grime on the top edges. For the rear window, use the back of your hand so you don't strain your wrist. The Exterior A warm, sunny spot might seem like the perfect place to wash and dry your car, but it guarantees streaks. Wash in the early morning or evening, or in a shady area. Rinse it Hose off loose dirt. Life the windshield wipers and spray the cracks below both windshields. Blast the undersides of the wheel wells and the hubcaps. Wash it Make sure your wash mitt is clean. "We've seen people ruin their finish because they didn't rinse off the grime on the mitt before washing it," says Robert Traicoff, supervisor of paint materials for the Ford Motor Company. One-eighth of a cup of mild dishwashing liquid, like Dove, in a bucket of water is fine for unwaxed finishes. Starting with the roof, soap an arm's-length-size section with your wash mitt and rinse it immediately. Then tackle the hood, the sides, and the trunk, in that order, using the same method, so you go from most to least clean for the sake of the soapy water. To prevent streaking, don't suds up the windows (you'll wash them separately). Use a separate sponge to scrub only the especially grimy areas: the windshield wipers and the tires. Save the right front wheel for last because it gets the dirtiest ― it hits the puddles and loose gravel on the side of the road. To remove tar, saturate a cloth with a mixture of 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon linseed oil; rub into the tar and remove. Rinse again Sluice off your car, making sure to power the soap out of nooks such as the rim of the gas-cap cover, under the door handles, and the innards of the side-view mirrors. Soap seeps out and streaks the car ― usually moments after you've finished drying the car and put everything away. Dry it Before water spots have a chance to mar the finish, use a towel to mop up the surface. Fold the towel as it gets damp. If you have a chamois, use it to mop up any remaining dampness. Remember to dry spots like the roof line just above the windows, which could spill excess water later when you move the car. Do windows Bugs, grease, and grime make auto glass harder to clean than the windows in your house. A detailer's favorite for cleaning windows and bug-spattered headlights is a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts water. To avoid streaking, give the window weather stripping a few hours to dry before you roll down the windows. In Between You won't need to do the full cleanup every time. But quick touch-ups between biweekly washes can make them easier. If you live in a dusty area or frequently pass road construction, hose off the car between washes. If your kids have a penchant for car sickness, use an ice scraper, which you might already carry in your car, to scoop up the offending liquid, and an all-purpose cleaner to spray and blot on the area. Treat your rig like a national park―take out what you bring in. Get in the habit of removing your coffee cups and gum wrappers each time you leave the car. While driving, toss your trash in the Puff'n Stuff litter bag, $12.50, stacksandstacks.com). Tree sap doesn't become a problem until it dries. Wipe it off before it sets or it may stain your car.

Why does fashion hate old people?

Why does fashion hate old people? Name withheld, by email You know, fashion gets a lot of grief from outsiders. Its fetishisation of skinniness, wealth, aesthetics, sexiness and, yes, youth, are all routinely used as sticks with which to beat it. Only last week Topshop was roundly mocked for using mannequins so skinny they barely made anatomical sense. And this is all perfectly to the right and well and good. Criticise away! Lord knows this column does it often enough. But here’s the rather uncomfortable truth about fashion: all it actually does is take society’s own desires, own attitudes, and exaggerate them shamelessly. This is certainly not to excuse the fashion industry’s loopiness, stupidity and even occasional amorality. But it does explain why, despite the general consensus that fashion is demented, the industry is enormously successful. This also, I suspect, clarifies why people get so upset by it. If fashion items were sold on promises to make everyone, say, grow a third arm, no one would give a good god damn. Instead, they would look at the adverts featuring three-armed models brandishing wildly expensive handbags (an extra arm so you can carry more £1,500 bags – genius!), shrug, laugh and carry on with their day. They would not campaign against these adverts on social media and newspapers would not run long think pieces about how this three-armed fascism was corrupting the minds of our young. The reason people – women, mainly, if we’re honest here – get so especially upset by the fashion industry’s obsession with youth and skinniness is because it is echoing that dark, cruel voice that lives in the heads of so many of us, the one that encourages our own self-loathing. For all that people criticise fashion’s obsession with thinness, the fact is it is very rare to find any non-fashion magazine that doesn’t in some way validate this view, by using very slim models or running nonsense articles about “detoxing” and “clean eating”. What the fashion industry does, really, is exploit our own worst thoughts about ourselves. Look, fashion is a billion–dollar industry, and you don’t make a billion dollars by being stupid (although an obvious exception to that rule comes in the form of future US president Donald Trump.) Which brings us, eventually, to its attitude towards old people and, in the fashion universe, this means anyone over the age of 40. Never mind the industry’s occasional inclusion of older women in advertising campaigns – such as Céline hiring Joan Didion, say, or Joni Mitchell shilling for Saint Laurent – because this is just about novelty, tokenism, faddishness, even. Having an older woman in a fashion campaign is the new having an overweight pop star appear in your fashion show, which was a very popular schtick about five years ago. It doesn’t mean the fashion industry actually thinks older women, or bigger women, are attractive, a point underscored by the fact that all the models on the runway are still themselves notably young and thin. It just means the industry wants to give itself a little pat on the back for being so deep it can occasionally deal with an older or bigger person (freaks) without actually vomiting all over its quilted Burberry jacket. Sticking with just the ageism issue for the moment, this is clearly a ridiculous state of affairs. Forget about the moral issue – it’s not even logical. Only a very small percentage of women can afford to buy designer clothes and, of those, an even tinier percentage of them are under 40. And yet, designers still insist on having their clothes modelled by extremely young women – children, in some cases, such as 14-year-old Sofia Mechetner, who appeared in Dior’s couture show last month. Do many 14-year-olds now buy couture? Is this what the kids are doing in between WhatsApping and taking something the media insists on calling “hippy crack”? I’m going to go with “no” here, so quite why a 14-year-old should be held up as the couture ideal by a design house is beyond me. Honestly, they may as well say couture should only be worn by mermaids. Iris Apfel: ‘People like me because I’m different’ Read more Which brings me to Iris Apfel, the 93-year-old fashion icon and designer, who worked for more than 40 years, with her equally impressive husband Carl, now 101, looking after the White House. Apfel is currently celebrated in the lovely documentary, Iris, directed by Albert Maysles, which I honestly could not recommend more strongly. If I had the space, I’d talk about the film and Apfel all day, but the point is that what the film shows most strongly is not just how brilliant fashion looks on older women, and how it’s older women who generally have the best sense of style, because they know themselves so well, but how much they are patronised by the rest of the world, and not just the fashion industry. Repeatedly, we see people talking to Apfel as if she were a child, which is how older people generally are treated by all of us. Yet the fact is that Apfel on a bad day is sharper than pretty much anyone on a good day and this condescension is as ridiculous as the fashion industry treating age like a disease that needs curing. But only criticising fashion for doing this is to be wilfully blind. The scary thing about the fashion industry is that, in a horrible way, it holds up a mirror to the faults within far too many of us.

5 High-Tech Car Safety Features You Shouldn’t Do Without

Safety features in cars are expensive, which is why automakers are often slow to adopt high-tech features that can add hundreds of dollars to the price of a car. Here are five emerging safety components growing in availability that we believe belong on your should-have list when shopping for a car. Inflatable Seat Belts Deploying like airbags, these seat belts inflate in a crash, spreading the impact force over an area five times larger than a conventional seat belt. And, like airbags, they inflate in milliseconds. Not only do they cushion the torso during a crash, but they minimize head and neck motion, reducing those injuries as well. Ford, which includes inflatable seat belts in some models, says they are particularly beneficial to children and older passengers. Ford began offering this feature in the second-row seat of Explorer in 2011, then expanded availability to other Ford and Lincoln models. Mercedes-Benz will offer them in some models, too. Lane-Departure Warning/Correction A majority of single-car accidents occur when the car runs off the road, and a substantial number of head-on collisions result from a car drifting into the oncoming lane. Using video or radar/laser technology, lane-departure warning (LDW) monitors the car’s location in relation to the edges of its lane and sounds a warning when it strays outside those boundaries. Some systems — like that of the redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200 — go as far as to nudge the vehicle back on course. Nearly every automaker offers a form of LDW on at least some of its models. Head-Up Display Head-up display (HUD) is a system that projects data on the windshield just below the driver’s sight line. Appearing roughly four feet in front of the driver and 8 to 10 inches above the car’s hood, the transparent information can include vehicle speed, turn signals, blind spot monitoring, turn-by-turn navigation, audio settings and more. HUD reduces the time a driver’s attention is away from the road, and that helps prevent accidents. Distracted driving includes everything from texting to turning around to yell at the kids, and the injuries from distraction-related accidents were up 9 percent in 2012 over 2011. It’s currently available in 38 models, according to Automotive News. Front/Rear Parking Sensors For a 5-foot, 8-inch tall driver, the blind spot behind a vehicle can extend from 9 feet for a hatchback to 24 feet for a pickup truck. Plenty of obstacles can lurk there. Although there are a few different types of systems used to warn drivers as they approach a solid object when parking, basically they operate by sending out pulses or waves, then measuring the return rate of those signals. The quicker the return, the closer the object. When engaged, the system usually uses a beeping sound that increases in frequency as the object grows closer. Frontal Crash Warning/Avoidance Driver distraction is the cause of many rear-end crashes. Frontal crash warning (FCW) uses radar or cameras to scan the road ahead, feeding the information to a computer that is constantly calculating the distance between the equipped car and whatever is ahead. When the distance decreases too quickly — especially if the driver doesn’t depress the brake — an alarm will sound. With some systems, the FCW will automatically apply the brakes. Buying a new car is the ideal time to brush up on the newest available safety features. A few are offered only in high-end models or pricey options packages, but you may be surprised at how accessible some of them are.

High-tech cars a hit with consumers

A majority of US drivers are willing to pay as much as US$1,499 to have high-tech entertainment and safety devices in their vehicles as consumers demand more connectivity, according to a Harris Poll. Back-up cameras, USB ports and smartphone charging are among the top desires, according to the online survey of 1,033 vehicle owners done for researcher AutoTrader.com. About 55 percent said music streaming services such as those of Pandora Media Inc and Spotify Ltd make driving more enjoyable. Advanced auto technologies will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show opening in Las Vegas on Jan. 6, including self-driving cars, dashboards covered in curved touch screens and vehicles controlled by smartwatches. Automakers and suppliers are seeking a piece of the US$11.3 billion in factory-installed technologies going into cars this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. “Consumer electronics are quickly becoming a spectacle in the automotive industry,” Michelle Krebs, an analyst for AutoTrader, said in a statement today. “Consumers are spending more time and money on car technology and they are particular about what they’re buying.” If automakers come up with smart technology that’s easy to use, 51 percent of those surveyed said they would be willing to pay as much as US$1,499 for it. Half also said they would wait about a year to get a car with the advanced features they want. SELLING POINT In-vehicle technology is the top selling point for 39 percent of auto buyers, compared to the 14 percent who care most about horsepower and handling, according to a survey from consulting firm Accenture Plc. Internet-connected cars worldwide will grow more than fourfold to 152 million by 2020 from 36 million now, according to researcher IHS Automotive. The AutoTrader survey, conducted in October, also found that while only 3 percent of vehicle owners have Wi-Fi in their cars, almost two-thirds of those use it daily. About 48 percent of respondents expressed a desire for in-vehicle Wi-Fi. And 52 percent said automakers should invest to improve information and entertainment systems, rather than rely on better integrating smartphone functions into dashboard touch screens. “We’re in the information era and shoppers are informed and they are adamant about the features they want,” Krebs said. “From manufacturers to suppliers and even aftermarket consumer electronics companies, this study shows us that there is still plenty of opportunity in the vehicle electronics market.” QUALCOMM CONCEPTS Qualcomm Inc today showed high-speed Internet access technology in a 2015 Maserati Quattroporte GTS and a 2015 Cadillac XTS. The concept cars, using Qualcomm’s latest processors, demonstrate how services found on smartphones and tablets are making their way into vehicles. The Cadillac concept uses Google Inc’s Android operating system in dashboard touch screens with graphics that display navigation, music and live streaming of sports, news and entertainment. The Maserati concept has BlackBerry Ltd’s QNX operating system in rear-seat entertainment systems with touch screens that have tablet-like swipe-and-pinch controls and voice recognition, Qualcomm said in a statement. FCA US, formerly Chrysler Group, today said it’s adding services on its Uconnect dashboard infotainment system that help drivers find a car in a parking lot, provide navigation destinations to vehicles remotely and automatically send e-mails on a car or truck’s mechanical health. FCA said it also redesigned the Uconnect Access app to make it function faster and more intuitively.

High-tech gadgets to become the norm in new cars

There could be an increase in high-tech gadgets second hand car parts on the market in future years as manufacturers becoming ever more aware of the need to offer consumers the latest in entertainment and information technology. High-tech gadgets in future cars According to new research by KPMG, car manufacturers increasingly believe that high-tech gadgets and internet-connected devices will be key in attracting customers in the future. As such, many are looking at entering corporate partnerships with technology companies to bring these devices to their vehicles. A survey by KMPG found that 34 per cent of car executives expect that consumers’ purchasing decisions over the next five years will be driven by whether the car they purchase has internet connectivity and built-in technologies such as navigation with live traffic update, voice recognition and access to smartphones through steering wheel controls and the dashboard. This puts the importance of such features almost on par with car safety (37 per cent) and environmental friendliness (40 per cent). “Global car executives believe that as consumers become accustomed to instant access at home and in the office, customers will expect the same services when on the move in their vehicles. In the future, connectivity will not simply be a ‘nice to have’ feature but an intrinsic part of a vehicle,” said John Leech, head of automotive at KPMG. Meanwhile, the second hand car parts of the future could also include components designed to increase the efficiency of vehicles. The survey found that over half (53 per cent) of car executives expect hybrid fuel to attract the most auto industry investment over the next five years, while 54 per cent of those polled said they expect suppliers of electric components, such as battery, e-motor and power electric companies, to gain a significant role in the automotive value chain between now and 2025. Which new car options to choose – and which to avoid

So you’ve decided which car to buy, but there are still plenty of choices to make – that’s where the new car options list comes in. Choose wisely and you can turn your good car into a great one, but choose poorly and the options could cost you a lot of money and make your car hard to sell on. So read on for our advice on how to choose the best new car options. What are optional extras? Optional extras are features that aren’t included as part of a particular model’s standard set of equipment but are available at additional cost. Every new car has a different range of options available, and they’ll be priced differently according to the make and model you choose. Options can range from alternative paint colours to different interior materials, gearboxes, alloy wheels and extra in-car technology. There are no hard and fast rules here, but these days most cars come with features like alloy wheels, electric windows, a radio and central locking. Most models of new cars on sale are available in a variety of different ‘trims’. These are priced differently and have different names depending on the manufacturer. The most familiar trims include Ford’s Zetec, Land Rover’s Vogue and Volkswagen’s GTI. Importantly, the trims all feature different amounts of standard equipment – the more you pay, the more equipment you get as standard. If you choose the trim level carefully, you can minimise the amount you’ll need to spend on options. How do I buy optional extras? When you order your new car, you’ll have the opportunity to choose from the options list. Most car manufacturers will list these options, and their prices, in brochures. And the more common options will likely be fitted to some of the cars available in your showroom. We recommend you test as many of your desired options before you order them, as their quality can vary enormously. For example, some expensive sat-navs fitted from the factory are little better than a standalone unit you could buy from a shop for £100. The cost of car options More and more motorists buy new cars on some sort of new car finance deal. Although traditional hire purchase remains popular, it’s the promise of cheaper monthly repayments provided by personal contract purchases (PCPs) that have really changed the way we buy cars. The beauty of PCPs is the ability to add on expensive options but only increase your monthly repayments by a few pounds. But tread carefully, because it’s possible to almost double the cost of your car – and your monthly car loan repayments – without really noticing. A MINI Cooper costing £15,500, can be pushed to more than £26,000, and it’s possible to add nearly £20,000 worth of options to a BMW 3 Series 320d, which increases its price by more than 55%. Company car options The value of any added options affects company car drivers too. The amount you’ll pay in company car tax is linked to the list price of the car (the price you’d pay at a dealer including options priced at more than £100, but excluding any discounts) and recorded for tax purposes as the P11D value. The higher the P11D value, the more you’ll pay in company car tax. The best new car options It sounds trite, but the best new car options are the ones you’ll get the most use from. Features like automatic self-parking might sound appealing, but you need to consider whether you’ll actually use them. That can be hard to work out until you buy the car, but it’s a decision you’ll need to make. From a purely financial point of view, there are options that are essential in order to ensure your car achieves the best price when you come to sell it. Air-conditioning is fitted to many, if not the majority, of new cars. That means if yours hasn’t got it, it may be harder to sell, and therefore worth less. The same applies to metallic paint. Other must-have options depend on the type of car you’re buying. Upmarket models are generally more desirable with leather seats and automatic gearboxes. Features that make your car easier to live with, such as parking sensors and sat-nav, are a good choice too, especially on larger cars. It’s important to remember that like the car as a whole, you’ll only recoup a percentage of the price of your options when you come to sell. Choosing leather seats might increase your car’s used value by £500 but might cost £2,000 in the first place. Not all options cost extra though. You’ll often be presented with a choice of ‘no-cost options’ meaning you’ll need to decide whether you want things like a space-saving spare wheel or tyre inflation foam (for the record, we always recommend the former). And in the case of sportier models, such as Audi S line or BMW M Sport models, you’ll have the option of replacing the uncomfortable sports suspension with a standard setup. Again, we recommend you do so. New car options to avoid It’s not really worth choosing lavish options, such as leather seats, on smaller, cheaper cars such as a Ford Fiesta. Such features are relatively rare on cars of this type, so used car buyers don’t really expect or need them, meaning they won’t really increase the car’s value. Over the last few years, there has been an explosion in the range of customisation options available. These usually consist of different ways you can dress up your car with contrasting paintwork, stickers, alloy wheel designs and interior trims. Cars like the MINI Hatchback, Vauxhall Adam and Fiat 500 have made a virtue of this to the extent that it’s conceivable there are some entirely unique examples on Britain’s roads. While it’s true to say you should buy the options you want and need, you should bear in mind that your choices could put off many potential buyers – decreasing your car’s value as a result. It’s important to remember that second-hand car values are driven primarily by dealers. If they become nervous because they don’t know how an individual buyer will react to an unusual colour scheme, for example, they’ll be willing to pay less for it. Rupert Pontin, head of valuations at used car price guide Glass’s said: “Factors such as colour have always had a large impact on used car values but the trend towards increasing visual personalisation is magnifying the effect. “You could have two Vauxhall Adams that are ostensibly the same on paper but, in the metal, are clearly hundreds or thousands of pounds apart in value because of choices that the original buyer made. “The mauve supermini with a tartan roof and yellow wing mirrors running on 13 inch white alloys might look horrendous to a middle aged man like me but great to a 17-year-old who has just passed their test. “The problem is that the trade finds it very difficult to know how to value some of these vehicles so will tend to price them down in order to minimise the financial risk.” More options or a more expensive trim? The new car options minefield is extraordinarily complex. But as a new car buyer you can get around this by upgrading the trim level you buy. You might spend £1,500 on options on a cheaper, lower level trim, but it might cost about the same to upgrade to the next trim up in the range. As well as making the new car purchase more straightforward, savvy used car buyers will see more value in a higher-spec trim than they will in a series of unrelated options. As such, they’ll usually pay more for it. Used car options The number of options you can choose on a used car is more limited than if you were buying a new car. Most options are installed at the factory and can’t be fitted at a later date. However most main dealers offer a range of accessories, ranging from tow bars to approved car mats. By buying used, you can take advantage of the money the original purchaser spent on options without paying as much for them.

Mercedes-Benz To Follow Tesla With Its Own Home Batteries

014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive – First Drive, May 2014 Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] may be the first automaker to try selling standalone battery packs for powering homes and businesses, but it may not be the only one for long. Mercedes-Benz could soon enter the energy storage business as well. A division of parent company Daimler has been testing battery packs that can power houses or store excess electricity from the grid, and plans to launch commercially in September. Called ACCUmotive, this division was created in 2009 to develop lithium-ion batteries. Like Tesla before its recent announcement, the Daimler arm has been testing energy storage systems under the radar for some time. It recently built an energy storage array operated by German electricity joint venture Coulomb. The array consists of 96 lithium-ion modules that together boast a combined 500 kilowatt hours of storage capacity, which is used to stabilize the Saxony Kamenz power grid. There are plans to expand it to 3,000 kWh of capacity. ACCUmotive has reportedly delivered more than 60,000 lithium-ion cells to customers—which may include Mercedes itself—and employs more than 250 people. Now it appears ready to expand even further. Mercedes, together with ACCUmotive, says it is testing battery packs for “light industrial, commercial, and private” applications, in sizes ranging from 2.5 kWh to 5.9 kWh. Individual packs can also be combined to provide more storage capacity for a given site, the company says. While Tesla’s decision to get into energy storage seems somewhat logical given the connection to its existing electric car business and Elon Musk’s SolarCity, Mercedes’ decision appears less straightforward. Tesla’s plans are partially fueled by the massive battery ‘Gigafactory’ it’s already building in Nevada, primarily to provide lithium-ion cells for the upcoming Model 3 electric car. Mercedes offers the B-Class Electric Drive, Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, and a growing range of plug-in hybrids, but it probably isn’t aiming for the same volumes. It also doesn’t have a Gigafactory of its own to churn out large numbers of cells for both electric cars and energy storage. But given its high-profile brand name, Mercedes could offer some competition for Tesla in the growing energy-storage market.

Seoul to limit plastic surgery ads

South Korea will restrict plastic surgery ads on public transport after complaints that they were fueling an unhealthy obsession with body image

SEOUL, South Korea – The South Korean capital Seoul is to restrict the use of plastic surgery adverts on public transport, officials said Wednesday, March 26, after complaints that they were fueling an unhealthy obsession with body image.

South Korea, and particularly Seoul, has an international reputation for plastic surgery, and adverts featuring famous surgeons and giant before-and-after photos are omnipresent – on street billboards, subway trains, bus stops and the backs of bus seats.

In the Apgujeong subway station at the heart of the upscale Gangnam district – home to hundreds of cosmetic surgery clinics – around half of all advertising prints and hoardings are promoting nose jobs, facelifts and other nips and tucks.

Under the new regulations, no more than 20 percent of advertising at any subway station can be connected with the plastic surgery industry.

"We have received a growing number of complaints from citizens who say these ads further promote an obsession with looks and are disturbing to look at," a municipal official told AFP.

"Overly sensational" before-and-after shots and slogans will be banned, he added.

The adverts will also be prohibited in areas such as bus stops close to elementary, middle and high schools, said city council official Lee Chang-Min.

"Many people complained these ads make people, including youngsters, believe that plastic surgery can be done so easily," Lee said.

Both officials said complaints surged after several fatal incidents involving botched plastic surgery.

Earlier this month a 34-year-old woman died of asphyxiation while having surgery on her nose and a man in his 30s died three days after undergoing a procedure on his jawbone.

Last December, a high school girl fell into a coma while having a nose surgery

Seoul slum life in the shadow of 'Gangnam Style'

Guryong is a squalid, sprawling slum settled in 1988 by squatters evicted due to the '88 Olympic Games, as far removed as possible from opulent and glitzy Gangnam district

This photo taken on October 11, 2012 shows highrise business buildings towering in the background over Guryong, a shanty town near South Korea's wealthiest Gangnam district in Seoul. Guryong -- a squalid, sprawling slum of plywood and tarpaulin shacks settled in 1988 by squatters evicted from other areas in a push to beautify Seoul as it prepared to host the Olympic Games. Nearly 25 years later, Guryong (which translates as "Nine Dragons") has more than 2,000 residents scrabbling out a subsistence living with Third World poverty levels and little or no proper sanitation. AFP PHOTO / KIM JAE-HWAN SEOUL, South Korea - Shadowed by the high-rises of Seoul's wealthiest Gangnam district, Kim Bok-Ja, 75, pulls her trolley of folded cardboard through a shanty town that sits uncomfortably in one of Asia's most developed cities. At a local recycling yard, Kim smiles thinly as she counts out the meagre cash return she gets for the load of boxes and packaging she spent all day collecting. "This is all I can do to survive, probably up until I die, because I live alone with no proper income," she said. Kim's home is Guryong -- a squalid, sprawling slum of plywood and tarpaulin shacks settled in 1988 by squatters evicted from other areas in a push to beautify Seoul as it prepared to host the Olympic Games. Nearly 25 years later, Guryong (which translates as "Nine Dragons") has more than 2,000 residents scrabbling out a subsistence living with Third World poverty levels and little or no proper sanitation. It's about as far removed as possible from the opulent, glitzy world of neighbouring Gangnam -- an upscale district of luxury boutiques and night clubs made famous by South Korean rapper Psy's global hit, "Gangnam Style". Taxi drivers have difficulty locating Guryong, although it is only separated from Gangnam by a six-lane highway and covers an area of 70 acres (30 hectares). "Our village is Seoul's biggest slum settlement but it will not appear on any maps," said Lee In, the 59-year-old deputy head of the Guryong residents' council. A significant portion of residents are in their 70s or 80s and live alone, most of them without any sort of state assistance. "Many are engaged in rough work or odd jobs to earn their daily living," Lee said. "The fact they don't starve is largely down to help from volunteers and religious groups." One of the many notable aspects of Guryong is the number of wooden crosses visible on the low-rise roofline, marking dozens of ramshackle churches that cater to the community. Another is that every inch of available land has been turned into small plots where residents grow vegetables to supplement their diet. "Symbol of inequality" Guryong dwellings are all illegal structures, and gas and electricity supplies almost non-existent, leaving smoky coal briquettes as the main heating source during Seoul's bitter winters. A fire in January spread through the flimsy plywood shacks in a matter of minutes, gutting scores of homes, while floods triggered by heavy rains in July last year destroyed a large section of the village. The only advantage of living in such crude housing is that it can easily be replaced. "What comes down during the day, we can erect again at night," said 54-year-old resident Kim Mi-Ran. The irony of Guryong's squalor -- and the factor most likely to lead to its eventual disappearance -- is that it sits on an area of prime real estate which developers have long coveted. The land is privately owned, but the squatters have been there so long that they have acquired a quasi-legal status buttressed by the municipal government's decision to grant them temporary residency cards last year. Earlier this year, a private developer came up with a plan to build low-rent accommodation to house Guryong residents and redevelop the land they vacate. The Seoul authorities have since proposed a similar plan of their own, and the two proposals have split the community down the middle with a heated debate over which would be more beneficial. "We don't trust politicians who make promises and never translate their words into action," said Kim Mi-Ran. Forcible eviction is an obvious alternative, but the authorities are particularly wary of taking extreme action. An effort to force illegal tenants out of a building slated for redevelopment in another Seoul district in 2009 triggered clashes that left five people and a police officer dead. Park Won-Soon, a long-time liberal activist who was elected Seoul mayor last October, has made it clear that any solution in Guryong must reflect the opinions and interests of its residents. "Under the current mayor, there is no question of using coercion," a municipal government official told AFP. For Kim Kyo-Seong, a professor at Chung-Ang University's graduate school of social welfare, Guryong is a concentrated embodiment of everything that is wrong with South Korea's rapid economic development. "It's a powerful symbol of inequality in our society," Kim said, citing widening income gaps, the lack of support for a rapidly ageing population and the marginalisation of those left behind by the country's industrial drive. - Lim Chang-Won, Agence France-Presse
